The Arizona League is a beginner-level minor league baseball league that operates in and around Phoenix , Arizona , USA and has been run by Major League Baseball since 1988 . Together with the Gulf Coast League, it forms the lowest level of the North American minor league system. Games are not marketed to the general public. Spectators can participate for free.

The major league games are played at the spring training facilities of their partner baseball clubs from mid-June to the end of August . Every Cactus League team plays on the Arizona League team with the exception of the Colorado Rockies .

The regular season consists of 56 games, with a limit of 35 players. Players cannot have more than three years of minor league experience to be eligible to play. The league is also where major league players often do their first rehab appearances.

The teams are primarily comprised of players signed from countries such as the Dominican Republic and Venezuela, as well as recently drafted high school and college players who are primarily from the United States and Puerto Rico and are owned by the The teams' partner baseball clubs are located. Most of the players were just selected in the draft , which takes place two to three weeks before the start of the season. No official attendance figures are recorded as there are no paid entry fees and no concessions are sold.

Bob Richmond is the President of the League. The league's offices are in Boise , Idaho .

history

The league began in 1988 on an experimental basis with four teams playing a schedule of 60 games. The games were scheduled in the morning to make sure the league doesn't compete with the Firebirds , Phoenix's triple-A team.
