Arlin Turner

Henry Arlin Turner (born November 25, 1909 in Abilene, Texas , † April 24, 1980 in Austin, Texas ) was an American literary scholar .

life and work

Arlin Turner studied first at West Texas State University ( BA 1927), then at the University of Texas ( MA 1930, Ph.D. 1934), where he taught for two years after completing his doctorate (1934-1936). From 1936 to 1952 he was professor of English literature at Louisiana State University , then from 1953 to 1979 at Duke University , and from 1979 to his death in 1980 at Southwest Texas State University .

Turner's research focused on 19th century American literature . He has published on Edgar Allan Poe , Herman Melville and Mark Twain , among others ; Of particular note are his biographies on George Washington Cable (1956) and Nathaniel Hawthorne (1980, published posthumously).
