Arlindo's shrew pouch rat ( Monodelphis arlindoi ) occurs in central and southern Guyana , in parts of northeastern Brazil and possibly also in Suriname . The species was in 2012 first described when the turned out that it was part of an investigation in the northwestern population of mono-Delphis brevicaudata - complex is a separate species. It was named after Arlindo Pinto de Souza Júnior (1958-2009), a taxidermist of the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi , a natural history museum in Belém .

Males of Arlindo's shrew pouch rat reach a head body length of 12 to 18.2 cm, have a 7 to 9.8 cm long tail and weigh 38 to 105 g. Females are significantly smaller with a head body length of 9.5 to 15 cm, a tail length of 6.5 to 9 cm and a weight of 33 to 96 g. The fur on the back from the ears to the base of the tail is gray. The sides of the body are reddish in color, the belly is yellowish to cream-colored or greyish. The hair on the back is approx. 8 mm long, on the belly it is only 4 mm long. The paws are brown or gray, the ears are small and solid gray. The tail is mostly hairless and brownish in color. Only the first third of the upper tail, which is close to the body, is covered with reddish hair. There are no dark circles under the eyes. Like probably all shrew pouch rats, the females do not have a pouch. The number of teats is not known. The karyotype of Arlindo's shrew pouch rat is 2n = 18, FN = 30.

Way of life

Arlindo's shrew pouch rat is found in the Amazonian lowland rainforests. So far nothing is known about the way of life, behavior, diet, activity patterns and reproduction of the animals.
