description

Armatocereus godingianus grows shrubby or tree-like with numerous spreading shoots and reaches heights of up to 10 meters. Often a smooth trunk of up to 1.5 meters high and a diameter of 15 to 50 centimeters is formed. The dark green shoots are divided into 30 to 60 centimeters long segments with a diameter of 7 to 10 centimeters, which are thickest at their base. There are seven to eleven ribs separated by deep incisions , which are 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters high. The 15 to 25 needle-like, flexible, brown or yellow thorns later turn gray and are spread out in all directions. They have a length of 1 to 5 centimeters.

The white flowers stand out horizontally. They are 7 to 9 inches long and 5 to 7 inches in diameter. The egg-shaped fruits are initially green and later turn brown. They are 6 to 13 inches long.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Armatocereus godingianus is distributed in Ecuador in the province of Chimborazo along the Río Chanchán and in the province of Azuay at altitudes of 1200 to 2300 meters.

It was first described as Lemaireocereus godingianus in 1920 by Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose. Edward James Salisbury put the species in the genus Armatocereus in 1947 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
