Arne Meurman

Arne Erik Meurman (born April 6, 1956 ) is a Swedish mathematician.

Meurman won the silver medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad as a student in 1974 and 1975 . He received his PhD in 1981 from Rutgers University under James Ivan Lepowsky (Characters of Rank Two Hyperbolic Lie Algebras as Functions at Quasiregular Cusps). He is a professor at Lund University .

After John McKay , John Horton Conway and Simon Norton found moonlight properties of modular forms in the 1970s that brought them in connection with the monster group , Igor Frenkel , James Lepowsky and Meurman succeeded in constructing representations of the monster group in vertex operator algebras in the 1980s with which Richard Borcherds then proved the moonlight properties. Vertex operator algebras are also important in string theory and conformal field theory.
