Arnold Gerstl (born October 17, 1888 in Prague , † 1957 in Windsor ) was a German-British painter and graphic artist .

Life

Little is known about Arnold Gerstl's childhood and youth. He spent this time in Prague and Vienna. Gerstl completed his studies at the art academies in Prague, Vienna, Berlin and Paris. Around 1912 he married Alice Beatrice, b. Perner (1889 Prague - 1953 Heidelberg). After a few years they got divorced. The marriage resulted in the two children Gerhard (* 1912 Mannheim) and Anneliese (* 1914 Mannheim).

Between 1913 and 1914 Gerstl was employed by the film studio Glashaus am Neckar in Schlierbach . The outbreak of war only interrupted this brief activity. From the beginning of the war until its end in 1918, Gerstl was an officer in the Austrian army. Probably shortly after returning from the war, he lived in Starnberg and worked there as a painter. At this time he became a member of the Luitpold Group and took part in the Munich art exhibitions in the Glaspalast every year between 1928 and 1931 .

In 1933 (1934?) Gerstl emigrated to England, probably because of his Jewish descent. There he was initially based in London. In 1939 he received British citizenship. From 1946 he became a curator at the Burton Art Gallery in Bideford .

Arnold Gerstl created portraits and depictions of people who are characterized by their colourfulness and sometimes a restrained expressionism.

" If Gerstl is certainly not a realist, not a factual of today or yesterday, he must be counted among the realists in the long line of great dreamers like Bosch and Breughel, Goya, Blake and Kubin. He does not create fabulous monsters , The proportions of his people and things are hardly different from those in nature, his entire world of images is very simple, the individual figure is hardly ever grotesque, and yet everyone feels that everything this painter gives us is anything but everyday life and reality. "

Gerstl's preferred means of artistic expression were oil painting and pastel painting .
