Arnold Hutschnecker

Arnold Aaron Hutschnecker (born May 13, 1898 in Austria ; † December 28, 2000 in Sherman ) was an Austro-American psychiatrist and psychotherapist .

Life

Hutschnecker grew up in a Jewish family and, after having passed his Matura , served in the Austro-Hungarian army in the First World War . As a result, Hutschnecker completed a degree in medicine at the Humboldt University in Berlin as well as further training as a psychiatrist before he ran his own practice in Berlin.

Arnold Hutschnecker, appeared as a public critic of Adolf Hitler , three years after the National Socialists came to power , Hutschnecker emigrated to New York as a persecuted Jew in 1936 . There he acquired the certificates in internal medicine and psychiatry, after which he practiced as an internist for many years. From the early 1950s, he increasingly specialized in psychotherapy. His psychotherapeutic consultations were taken up by, among others, the US President Richard Nixon , with whom he stayed in contact until his death, and Gerald Ford , who denied this.

In 1951 he published the bestseller The Will to Live . Hutschnecker died on December 28, 2000 as one of the last veterans of the Kuk Army in his home in Sherman, Connecticut .
