Arnold Sommerfeld Center
The Arnold Sommerfeld Center (ASC) is a research center for theoretical physics at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . It was established on November 5, 2004.
The ASC is also an international meeting center that offers scientists from all over the world and from all disciplines of theoretical physics the opportunity to discuss, exchange knowledge and collaborate scientifically.
An essential element of the ASC that goes beyond the individual disciplines is the joint design of advanced teaching. Many methods and techniques of theoretical physics are used with great success in a wide variety of sub-areas of theoretical physics. Following on from Arnold Sommerfeld's tradition , the ASC undertakes to offer a wide range of advanced lectures, seminars and workshops with the involvement of visiting scholars, to support graduate students, to support the elite for young scientists and to internationalize the course.
Once a year, the ASC awards the Arnold Sommerfeld PhD award for the two best dissertations in theoretical physics of the past year. Successful membership in the ASC Graduate School is a prerequisite for the award.
