Giorgi "Gia" Dwali ( Georgian გიორგი "გია" დვალი ; English transcription Giorgi Dvali , also Georgi Dvali ; born May 30, 1964 in Tbilisi ) is a Georgian-American physicist and university professor who deals with astroparticle physics and quantum gravity. He is a professor at New York University (Center for Cosmology and Particle Physics) and at Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich ( Arnold Sommerfeld Center ).

Dwali graduated in 1985 and received his PhD in high energy physics and cosmology from Tbilisi State University in 1992. As a post-doctoral student he was at the International Center for Theoretical Physics and at CERN . In 1998 he was at New York University, where he became Professor in 2003 and Silver Professor in 2007 . He also teaches in Munich, where he is director at the Max Planck Institute for Physics , and at the Perimeter Institute . He has also been a permanent member of CERN since 2007.

In 1998, together with Nima Arkani-Hamed and Savas Dimopoulos , he proposed the ADD model of large extra dimensions to explain the relative weakness of gravity compared to the other fundamental interactions. In 2000, together with Gregory Gabadadze and Massimo Porrati, he proposed a long-range modification of gravity to explain the accelerated expansion of the universe by embedding the usual 3 + 1-dimensional Minkowski space in 4 + 1 dimensions as a 3- brane (DGP model).

In 2000 he received the New York Mayor's Science Award. He was a Packard Fellow, Sloan Fellow and was a Humboldt Professor in 2008.
