history

Arnside Tower from the west with the collapsed wall

The Arnside Tower was built in the second half of the 15th century. Apartment towers were often built in the unsafe areas of northern England and southern Scotland . The tower, built from limestone quarries , was originally five stories high and had a footprint of 15 meters by 10.2 meters. At the side of the tower was a building wing of the same height, as was customary in Scotland, but is rare in England. Historian Anthony Emery suggests that the construction may have been influenced by Ashby de la Zouch Castle , which was rebuilt by Lord Hastings in 1464 .

One of the tower's walls collapsed around 1900, and since 2014 the Arnside Tower has been in very poor condition according to English Heritage , so restoration work is urgently needed. The Arnside Tower is a Scheduled Monument and is a Historic Building II *. Grade listed.

tourism

The residential tower is in private hands and is in a ruinous condition. The local tourist office advises that the tower can be easily seen from a nearby footpath.
