The Arnstadt – Ichtershausen railway was a branch line in Thuringia . It was initially operated by the Arnstadt-Ichtershausen Railway (AIE).

The railway entrepreneur Herrmann Bachstein opened a five-kilometer, standard-gauge railway line on December 13, 1885, which had its starting point in Arnstadt in the Principality of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen . From the AIE's own station, which was connected to the Arnstadt main station 500 meters away by a track that was only used for goods traffic, it led in a north-easterly direction in the Gera valley to the Ichtershausen (1910: 2,500 inhabitants) in the Duchy of Saxony -Coburg and Gotha and was later to be extended to Erfurt .

Right next to the Rudisleben stop was the Arnshall salt works until 1912, owned by the Flaschendräger brothers since 1883. During the heyday, these supplied up to 1,000 tons of saline salt per year and purchased Westphalian coal for the boiling pans by rail.

On February 18, 1895, the railway line became the property of the Süddeutsche Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft , but the Arnstadt management of the central administration for Secundairbahnen Herrmann Bachstein continued to operate until March 31, 1921 . In 1939, the railway's vehicle fleet consisted of three steam locomotives, three passenger cars, five freight cars and one omnibus. After the Soviet occupation troops moved into Thuringia, the railway was placed under the administration of the State of Thuringia in 1946, and then incorporated into the Deutsche Reichsbahn from April 1, 1949 .

Passenger traffic from the Ichtershausen stop to the Ichtershausen terminus was stopped on May 17, 1953, as the section of the route ran on the town's main street. The tracks were dismantled in 1955. On the rest of the section, passenger train traffic - a maximum of six pairs of trains a day - was maintained until September 1962, when it was completely replaced by buses. A bus line had been running parallel to the railway since September 1, 1931, the timetable for which before the Second World War had a 30- to 60-minute cycle.

Freight traffic, which served numerous industrial companies in the Geratal, also gradually decreased and around 1990 was limited to the service of sidings in Arnstadt and Rudisleben. With the new construction of the A 71 , a new road feeder was created, which cut the still existing route. The Rudisleben station was thus cut off from the railway network and shut down. Freight traffic between Arnstadt and Arnstadt Ost ceased on September 30, 1996. The track is still available as a station track.
