Arriere-ban
The arriere-ban (in German : Heerbann ) was a war proclamation in France in the Middle Ages . The French king thus formally called on all vassals to equip and provide armed contingents for an imminent war in accordance with their duty. In most cases, this also included temporary arms service by the lower classes. As a rule, a specific date and place was named at which the troops had to be adequately equipped and supplied. The task of the proclamation and the organization of the arriere-ban was incumbent on the Profos of Paris .
The expression arrière-ban is composed of the French words arrière , "back", and ban , "ban, Aufgebot". Ban included only the array of vassals who were directly subordinate to the king, while the arriere-ban also included the vassals of the vassals. So also those who were not directly subordinate to the king.
