Arrigo Cellina

Arrigo Cellina (born August 3, 1941 ) is an Italian mathematician who deals with analysis.

Cellina received her PhD from the University of Maryland (Institute of Hydrodynamics and Applied Mathematics) in 1968. He then went back to Italy, where he taught in Perugia, Florence, Padua and at the University of Milan. He was professor at the Scuola Internazionale Superiore di Studi Avanzati (SISSA) in Trieste (where he was from 1978 to 1996 and headed the Functional Analysis and Applications department) and is professor at the Università degli Studi di Milano - Bicocca .

He is one of the founders of the theory of differential inclusions (generalizations of ordinary differential equations to set-valued functions) and introduced new methods there. He applied them to the calculus of variations and hydrodynamics, among other things . Later he turned to questions of the calculus of variations, such as the validity of the Euler-Lagrange equations , sufficient and necessary conditions for the existence of minima, the regularity of minimizers and others.

From 1999 to 2001 he was director of the International Summer School of Mathematics (CIME) in Florence.
