Arsal ( Arabic عرسال, DMG ʿArsāl ) is a village in the Baalbek District , Baalbek-Hermel Governorate , Lebanon , about 124 kilometers northeast of Beirut and 3 km east of Labweh . The place is at an altitude of 1550 m.

Refugee situation

An Islamic aid organization from Beirut set up refugee camps in and around the city of Arsal in 2013.

During the uprising in Arsal during the Syrian civil war , the city became the scene of fierce fighting between Islamist Syrian rebels and the Lebanese military in 2014 .

Many Syrians fled to Arsal during the war. At times 90,000 Syrians lived there alongside 30,000 Lebanese. In the summer of 2018 there were still around 60,000 Syrian refugees in the city.

In 2019, the Lebanese central government decided to demolish the refugees' huts, which had been built from hollow blocks during the war years , on the grounds that there were no building permits. According to the UNHCR, around 2300 accommodations in 17 camps around Arsal and thus up to 15,000 people, about half of whom are children, are affected by the decision .

As bulldozers were used during the demolition, no consideration was given to the interior furnishings and the destruction of mattresses, kitchen appliances, furniture and water tanks was accepted, the humanitarian situation on site has deteriorated dramatically. From now on, according to the government, only tents for Syrian residents are allowed.
