The Baalbek-Hermel Governorate ( Arabic محافظة بعلبك - الهرمل) is one of eight governorates in Lebanon . The administrative seat is in Baalbek (Arabic Baʿlabakk ).
history
The formation of the governorate was decided in 2003. It was not until 2014 that it was removed from the Bekaa governorate and Bashir Khodr was appointed governor.
geography
The Baalbek-Hermel governorate covers an area of 3,009 km². It borders Syria (north and east), the governorate of North Lebanon , the Mount Lebanon Governorate (in the west), the Beqaa Governorate (in the south) and the Governorate Akkar (north).
Ethnic division
The majority of the population is Shiite with smaller minorities of Orthodox Christians , Maronites and Sunnis .
