The Akkar Governorate ( Arabic محافظة عكار) is one of eight governorates in Lebanon . The administrative seat is in Halba .
history
The formation of the governorate was decided in 2003. It was not until 2015 that it was removed from the governorate of North Lebanon and Imad Labaki was appointed governor.
geography
The Akkar Governorate covers an area of 788 km². It borders Syria (in the north), the Governorate of North Lebanon (in the south) and the Governorate of Baalbek-Hermel (in the east).
Ethnic division
The majority of the population is Sunni , while larger minorities are Orthodox Christians , Maronites and Alawites . There are only a few Shiites .
