Arsenal is a London Underground station in the London Borough of Islington . It is in the Travelcard tariff zone 2, in the immediate vicinity of the Highbury , the no longer used football stadium of Arsenal FC in the Highbury district . In 2013, 3.09 million passengers used the station served by the Piccadilly Line .

history

The station was opened on December 15, 1906 by the Great Northern, Piccadilly and Brompton Railway , the predecessor of the Piccadilly Line. The original name was Gillespie Road . After Arsenal FC moved into its new stadium in 1913, its manager Herbert Chapman pushed for a name change. Eventually the station was renamed Arsenal (Highbury Hill) on October 31, 1932 . In 1960 the addition to brackets was dropped. The wall tiles, which show the original name Gillespie Road in large letters, have been preserved. Due to the terrorist attacks on July 7, 2005 , the station was closed for a few weeks; it reopened on August 4th.

investment

The station building is on a narrow street in the middle of a residential area with row houses in the Victorian style. It was created in a gap between two residential buildings. The architect Leslie Green used the typical "house style" of the Underground Electric Railways Company of London : blood-red glazed terracotta bricks, large semicircular windows on the floor and serrated cornices . In the early 1930s, the building was completely rebuilt and widened by the demolition of a neighboring house, but Arsenal still has one of the narrowest facades on the entire underground network.

What is unusual for a tube-type underground station is the lack of escalators and elevators, instead a ramp a little over 100 meters long leads to the platforms. The reason for this is, on the one hand, the shallow depth and, on the other hand, the location of the tunnel tubes under the tracks of the East Coast Main Line . Due to its location away from main roads, Arsenal is far less frequented than neighboring stations on this line. On match days of Arsenal FC, however, the station continues to be used more than average, as the Emirates Stadium , which opened in 2006, is also not far away.
