Arshan is a recently discovered volcanic field in the Da Hinggan Mountains in Inner Mongolia in northeast China .
It consists of over 40 volcanic craters. The youngest volcanic cones, the Yanshan and the Gaoshan , are perfectly preserved. Basaltic lava flows poured out of them, damming the Halahale River in six places. Dating of the volcanic slag using the radiocarbon method shows an age of the eruptions between 2000 and 1900 years. The Yanshan volcanic cone is about 362 meters high and the Gaoshan crater is about 140 meters deep.
