Kind of Ingels

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Art Ingels is an American racing car maker and is known as the "father of karting ".

In 1956, when he was a racing car builder at Kurtis Kraft , an engineering company famous for building Indy racing cars, he built the first kart in history from scrap metal and a leftover two-stroke engine from the West Bend Company. The two-stroke engine drove the rear wheel of the kart via a bicycle chain. It was built in his two-car garage in Echo Park, California and tested in the Rose Bowl parking lot. The concept soon found imitators and the first races were held in parking lots and the first karts were sold.

Despite the success of Ingel's invention, Kurtis Kraft refused to set up his own karting department. Ingels then left the company and founded the Ingels & Borelli Kart Company with Lou Borelli , who had supported him in building the first prototype. The company built hand-made karts and in 1958 was able to sell the first examples of the “Caretta” model.
