Artarios

Artarios ( old Persian: Artareme ) was a member of the Persian Achaemenid dynasty in the 5th century BC. He was a son of the Great King Xerxes I with an unknown concubine.

Under Artaxerxes I , Xerxes II and Dareios II Artarios officiated as satrap in Babylonia . He is mentioned by Ktesias of Knidos ( Persika 38, 39 [after Lenfant's edition: 41, 42]). Accordingly, he was in the years after 456 BC. Sent as a messenger with an embassy to the rebel Megabyzos II. To mediate between him and Artaxerxes I. Megabyzos had recently defeated two royal armies and seriously wounded Menostanes , the son of Artarius, in the process.

The ancient Persian name of Artarios is recorded from preserved clay tablets of the Murašû family from Nippur , in which Menostanes is also mentioned.
