Xerxes II.

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Xerxes II ( Persian خشایارشا Chaschayārschā [ xæʃæjɔːrˈʃɔː ], Old Persian : Chschayaŗschā ; † beginning of 423 BC BC ) was 424-423 BC. Chr. Great King of the Persian Achaemenid Empire .

Due to the very poor sources, it is hardly possible to give precise details on the person of Xerxes, who is only mentioned by the ancient historians from Ktesias of Knidos in his Persika . After the death of his father Artaxerxes I (who died between December 424 / February 423 BC), Xerxes II became the Persian great king. After a reign of only 45 days, he was murdered in his sleep by his half-brother Sogdianos . He then ascended the throne himself, but was in turn murdered after a few months by a half-brother who ascended the throne as Darius II .
