Arteries of the trunk wall of man

The superior epigastric artery ("upper upper abdominal artery ") - referred to as the cranial epigastric artery in animal anatomy - is an artery that comes from the chest cavity and extends to the lateral trunk wall . Along with the musculophrenic artery , it is one of the two terminal branches of the internal thoracic artery .

The superior epigastric artery supplies the anterior upper trunk wall and anastomoses with the inferior epigastric artery at the level of the navel . In animals with thoracic mammary glands , it takes care of the mammary complexes there .

In arteriosclerosis with gradual narrowing of the aorta , a collateral circulation can develop via the superior and inferior epigastric arteries , which enables adequate supply of the lower extremities .
