An artesian spring is a natural discharge from an artesian (confined) aquifer . To such a phenomenon occurs when groundwater in a valley between two groundwater dielectrics is dammed. If the pressure level of the groundwater becomes greater than the distance to the earth's surface, it can emerge as an artesian spring.

Artesian springs occur a. swell up as a fault .

Lakes and other still waters that are fed by artesian springs are forms of pressurized water lakes . Artificially drilled artesian groundwater layers are known as artesian wells . Geysers are not artesian sources, as the pressure here is not created by standing water, but by the change in volume when the groundwater is heated (hydrothermal pressurized water).

Local occurrences

Artesian springs in the area of the limestone edges of the Thuringian Forest and the Harz Mountains are often referred to as Spring . Examples are the Mühlberger Spring and the Kainspring near Oberdorla .
