The Kainspring or Kainsprung is a karst spring on the eastern edge of the Hainich near Mühlhausen in Thuringia .
location
The spring surrounded by trees is located in the Vogtei community west of Oberdorla in the immediate vicinity of the Melchior fountain . The Wilde Graben rises from here and flows into the Unstrut as the Seebach .
description
The Kainspring pours at 100 liters per second, has a diameter of about 30 meters and a depth of 12 meters. The spring water has an average temperature of 10 ° C . The Kleine Kainspring is north of the spring in a swampy depression. This has only a low water drainage.
The Kainspring was mentioned in a document as early as 1367. The source is probably much older. A memorial stone at the karst spring reminds of the village “Kogen”, which was located here from 970 to 1480.
Say the name
Once upon a time, two boys west of the village of Oberdorla played with the marbles. One of the boys was named Cain. While playing, he threw one of his balls too far and it fell into the cracks between some large stones that lay in a small hollow. Cain tried to lift the stones to get the ball out. Finally one of the chunks swayed and gave way. Immediately before Cain could reach for the bullet, a powerful jet of water shot at him, which soon filled the whole hollow. His playmate called out to him in shock: "Jump, Cain you will drown!" The incident caused a lot of attention and gave the source the name Kainspring.
