Hugh Alexander Kennedy ( 1809 - October 22, 1878 ) was a British chess master .

Kennedy was a former Army Captain and a leading London chess player. In 1844 he lost a game against Howard Staunton (3: 8). In 1845 he played on the team with Staunton in Portsmouth in two telegraph games (one lost and one draw) against a team of Henry Thomas Buckle , George Walker , William Davies Evans , Perigal and Tuckett in London. He lost two games to Elijah Williams in 1846 and to Edward Löwe in 1849, both in London.

Hugh Alexander Kennedy played in the great London international chess tournament of 1851 and finished sixth there. He defeated Carl Mayet in round 1 with two wins. In round two he lost to Marmaduke Wyvill . In round three he defeated James Mucklow with four wins, and finally lost to József Szén .

In 1862 he lost what was perhaps the first international telegraph game against Serafino Dubois .
