Arthur Batut (born February 9, 1846 in Castres , † January 19, 1918 in Labruguière ) was a French photographer and pioneer of aerial photography .

Life

Labruguière, 1889

Batut was interested in history, archeology and photography. His book on Kite Aerial Photography , published in 1890, contained his aerial photograph of Labruguière , the place where he spent most of his life, taken in 1889 with the help of a kite . Probably in 1887 or 1888 he was the first to be able to produce aerial photographs using this method.

At the time, aerial photography with kites had potential in aerial reconnaissance , but also in agriculture and archeology. Nadar took the first aerial photos from a balloon in 1858 . The use of unmanned kites promised advantages, especially for military use.

Inspired by Francis Galton , Batut also created type portraits from individual portraits using multiple exposures.
