Career

Bispo do Rosário was a descendant of African slaves. Before he was fired for rebellion in 1933, he worked as a cabin boy and boxer. He then got by doing odd jobs at power plants and hotels in Rio until he was admitted to a mental hospital in 1938 at the age of 29 for schizophrenic paranoia believing he was Saint Joseph and on a divine mission. In order to resist the mental decline, he began to build objects with naive themes from simple materials that he fished out of the garbage. By the time he died, 50 years after being admitted to the clinic, he had created around 800 works in various designs. Among other things, he embroidered messages and names of people he had met on fabric. He also wrote poems and created sculptures. His work is administered in the Museu Bispo do Rosário Arte Contemporana in Rio de Janeiro .
