Arthur Samuel Newman

Arthur Samuel Newman (* 1862 ; † 1943 ) was an English engineer in the field of photography .

Newman was a designer of photographic and cinematographic apparatus, presented the first lamella shutter in 1889 and developed the "Celeritas" shutter in 1890 together with Simpson's of Clerkenwell, London. Together with the companies Newman & Guardia and Newman & Sinclair until 1908, he built various cameras, including the "Standard", "Nydia", "Sybil", "Centum" (100 pictures on imperforate 35 mm film ) or the N. & S. Reflex Camera. He built early cinema equipment for Green , in 1897 the “Viventoscope” projector for Thomas Henry Blair , made films and gave cinema shows. In 1909 he campaigned for the standardization of motion picture films . In 1911 he designed the first Kine Camera from N. & S. and later their Auto Kine Camera with spring mechanism.

He worked as a consultant for photography and cinematography companies, was a founding member of the Royal Photographic Society and received the RPS Progress Medal in 1936. In his memory, the Newman Lecture and a board were set up.
