Arthur Ulrichs (born December 8, 1838 in Fürstenberg ad Weser , † April 22, 1927 in Braunlage ) was a German forester . He introduced skiing in the Harz Mountains and was the first to practice skiing systematically in Germany.

Supraregional importance

Arthur Ulrichs worked from 1879 to 1888 as the chief forester in Braunlager Forst. In the winter of 1883 a storm caused extensive forest damage, which had to be estimated as soon as possible. Since it was difficult to make progress in the deep snow, despite the Truger ( snowshoes ), the estimates were regularly up to four times incorrect.

In order to simplify the work in the snow-covered forest, Ulrichs had the first Harzer skis built by the local wheelwright based on the Norwegian model. The advantage of skis over snowshoes was quickly proven.

In order to prepare future forest workers for the application of this new work aid and since skiing proved to be a suitable physical exercise, the school subject “skiing” was introduced in Braunlage in the winter of 1890. In September 1892 Ulrichs was one of the 16 founding fathers of the "Skiclubs-Braunlage" (WSV Braunlage von 1892 eV), the oldest ski club that still exists today. The foundation of the "Upper Harz Ski Club" (February 19, 1896) - from 1927 Harz Ski Association - on the Brocken can be traced back to him.

Regional importance

Arthur Ulrichs was one of the founders of the Harz Club branch association Braunlage on September 9, 1887 .

In 1913 he began, together with the landscape painter Thomas and the teacher Schmidts , to collect old objects worth preserving from the residents for a local museum. As a co-founder of the museum association, he took on the role of the eight man and directed the museum, which opened in 1916, until his death. Today's home and FIS ski museum still shows the exhibits that were collected at the time.

He also wrote various reports for various travel guides and a dictionary of the Braunlager dialect.
