The Hondrich artillery plant (army name "Wald" A 1955) is a former casemate plant of the Swiss Army in the area of the municipality of Spiez . It was an artillery plant from 1944–1992, disarmed and dismantled in 1994. 1995–1998 a detonics laboratory was installed.

Artillery plant

The work was built in the rock ( Triaskalk ) on the eastern flank of the Hondrichhügel (Hondrichwald) at around 690  m above sea level. M. , 45 meters above the Hondricht tunnel of the Bern-Lötschberg-Simplon railway (since 2006 BLS AG ), excavated. It was not connected to the Heinrich (KP Heinrich) command post, which was also located in the Hondrichhügel , and had no direct access to the BLS Hondrich railway tunnel passing under the fortress .

The factory had the task of supporting the defensive struggle of the infantry in their firebox with their artillery fire, centrally directed by KP Heinrich, and to keep the artillery plant with his infantry.

The AW Hondrich was operated by the fortress artillery company (Fest Art Kp) I / 15, which was subordinate to the fortress department (Fest Abt) 15. The company consisted of a command platoon, two artillery platoons, each with two 10.5 cm fortress cannons, an infantry platoon, a half-platoon of mine throwers and a factory protection platoon. In the 1990s, the facility was modernized with a monobloc weapon position.

Armament

  • two 10.5 cm cannons 39 L42 on a stand mount (until 1982 two 7.5 cm cannons 03/22)
  • two 10.5 cm cannons 35 L42 on a lever mount.
  • two 8.1 cm mortars (MW) 33
  • four 8.3 cm rocket tubes 80
  • Light machine guns on a ball mount
  • four 20 mm anti-aircraft guns (Flab Kann) 38 W + F (from 1961 Fest Flab Abt 21).

Dismantling

In 1994 the plant served the military department as a pilot plant for the dismantling of larger fortresses by the fortress guard corps (FWK). The disarmament comprised pushing back (weapons, ammunition, corps material, operating supplies, technical fortress material and transmission material), the sale of liquidation material that was no longer usable and disposal (rubble, scrap metal, cables, plastics, etc.). The demolition of the infantry obstacle around the facility, which was partly anchored in the rock and overgrown with young forest, was very laborious.

Detonics laboratory

After major renovations and extensions, the detonics laboratory of the armaments services group (now armasuisse ) has been located in the former artillery plant since 1998 . This replaces open blasting sites and bunkers and is one of the most modern facilities in Europe. The detonation of ammunition and explosives up to 15 kg TNT equivalent in the blasting chamber is evaluated with X-ray flash and high-speed cameras.
