Álvarez played in the following three games for the Mexican national team: on February 6, 1985 against Switzerland (1: 2), on February 14, 1989 against Poland (3: 1) and on February 23, 1989 against El Salvador ( 2: 0) he played his only international match over the full distance of 90 minutes.
