Arturo Alessandri Besa (born October 31, 1923 in Santiago de Chile ) is a Chilean lawyer and politician .

education

Alessandri was the grandson of Chilean President Arturo Alessandri Palma and nephew of President Jorge Alessandri Rodríguez . He was born the son of Arturo Alessandri Rodríguez and his wife Raquel Besa Montt. He is married to Nancy Cohn Montealegre.

After completing a school education at the Grange School and studying law at the Universidad de Chile , he graduated in July 1949.

Start of political career

In 1972 he began his political activity when he joined the right-wing conservative Partido Nacional . The following year he was elected a member of the constituency around Antofagasta for the legislative period from 1973 to 1977, but was unable to fulfill his mandate due to the 1973 coup d'état by the military around Augusto Pinochet .

Activities in the economy during the military dictatorship

At the Asociación Interamericana de la Propiedad Industrial (ASIPI) , Alessandri was Vice President from 1976 to 1979. In addition, he worked on the advisory boards of other industrial and business associations.

In 1983 he was appointed Honorary Consul of Chile in Singapore.

Resumption of political activity after the end of the dictatorship

For the constituency of the Antofagasta region , Alessandri was elected senator in 1989, as an independent candidate with the support of the right. During his tenure, he sat on the Foreign Affairs Committee and as a substitute member of the Mining Committee, which he ultimately chaired.

1993 presidential candidacy

When the leading right-wing party in Chile, the Renovación Nacional , failed to put up a candidate for the Chilean presidential election in 1993, the Unión Demócrata Independiente named him a candidate for the center-right alliance Alianza por Chile . He achieved 24.41% of the vote in the election and was defeated by the center-left candidate Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle , who won 57.98% of the vote.

Alessandri is a partner in a law firm specializing in patent law. He is a board member of several companies and is culturally involved in the Association of Opera Friends, as an advisor to the cultural society of Santiago and as vice-president of the municipal theater.
