Aruba Ports Authority

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Aruba Ports Authority (APA for short) is a public company based in Oranjestad on the Caribbean island of Aruba .

The limited liability company was founded in 1981 and is 100% owned by the Aruba government. The company with 90 employees is responsible for the two ports of Oranjestad and Barcadera and operator of the corresponding waterways, facilities and traffic routes in the port area.

Stevedoring

The stevedoring is carried out in both the cruise port and the cargo port by a private contractor who has leased the premises on a long-term basis on the basis of a concession agreement with the government of Aruba. The current stevedoring operator is the Aruba Stevedoring Company NV (ASTEC), which is responsible for the complete cargo handling, i.e. the loading and unloading of ships. The loading equipment is owned by ASTEC.

Port pilots

The port pilot boats of the APA are marked with the internationally customary label PILOT. The two port areas are guarded by the APA security service.

There has also been a tram line between the cruise terminal and the city center since 2013 .

Barcadera port

The Barcadera port is located around five kilometers southeast of the Oranjestad port facility and has a quay around 1200 meters long. In 1999 and 2000, the APA began the renovation. The port has been updated with the appropriate facilities for handling container freight and sea freight traffic has largely been relocated from the port of Oranjestad to the port of Barcadera. In Oranjestad mainly only cruise ships are handled. The gas and petrol tankers and the majority of RoRo ships and general cargo are also loaded and unloaded in Bacadera. The port of Barcadera is currently being converted into a container port with a free zone . Construction of the Barcadera Multi Cargo Terminal began at the beginning of 2014. The concessionaire ASTEC is taking over the investments in the terminal infrastructure.
