Arvalus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Arvalus was the name of a healing and / or agricultural deity in Celtic mythology .

mythology

The name Arvalus is often found in connection with gods at medicinal springs. According to the Interpretatio Romana , Arvalus was equated with Apollo , presumably because he was also a healing deity.

Another, not uncontroversial, interpretation equates him with Saturn because he is seen as the god of nature and agriculture. This is concluded from the derivation of his name from the developed proto-Indo-European word parts * aro- ("relating to agriculture") and * -walo- ("strong"). This is supported by an inscription found in Blackmoorgate, Derbyshire .
