Baron Arvid Axel Mardefelt (* around 1655; † May 18, 1708 in Jakin, Poland ) was a Swedish infantry general of the 18th century and confidante of King Charles XII.

Life

Mardefelt was the son of Field Marshal Conrad Mardefelt . From 1702 he directed the operations of the Swedish Army in western Poland and in 1704 captured Poznan . In 1706 he distinguished himself in the battle of Fraustadt .

On October 29, 1706, in the Great Northern War, 5,000 Swedish and 10,000 Polish soldiers under General Mardefelt took part in battle at Kalisch August the Strong . They were completely destroyed by its 35,000-strong Russian, Saxon and Polish troops. Stanislaus I. Leszczyński's Polish cavalry was dispersed. Mardefelt came together with over 100 officers, including Polish magnates , into Polish captivity .

After his release from captivity in 1707, Mardefelt died of severe gout .
