Asaf Khan

Abul-Hasan ibn Mirza Ghiyas Beg, better known by his courtly nickname Asaf Khan (born 1569 ; died November 10, 1641 ), was an Indian politician of the Mughal period .

family

The Asaf Khan family (Asaf Chān) was of Persian origin; the father, who later received the honorary title Itimad-ud-Daula , the mother and 4 children came to northern India as refugees around 1590. As the older brother of Nur Jahan , he was brother-in-law of the Grand Mughal Jahangir . His daughter Mumtaz Mahal (1593–1631) married Prince Khurram, the later Mughal Mughal Shah Jahan . Asaf Khan was a vizier under both Jahangir (r. 1605–1627) and Shah Jahan (r. 1627–1658) ; he had great influence under both rulers. His grandson Aurangzeb (ruled 1658–1707) was the last important Mughal ruler of India.

biography

In 1625, Jahangir appointed Asaf Khan governor ( subahdar ) of Gujarat and two years later governor of Lahore. Even before Jahangir's death (1627), Asaf Khan stood against his sister and on the side of his son-in-law Shah Jahan in the struggle for succession to the throne. He succeeded in disempowering his sister and, on behalf of Shah Jahan , eliminating his rival to the throne, Shahriyar , the youngest son of Jahangir. He defeated Shahriyar, who was married to Ladli Begam, the daughter of Nur Jahan's first marriage, and killed him. In the course of the dispute he was able to kidnap the sons of Shah Jahan, who had taken his sister hostage, from their palace.
