Asaf Pekdeğer
Asaf Pekdeğer (born October 25, 1950 in Mersin , Turkey ; † May 17, 2011 in Berlin , Germany ) was a German-Turkish geoscientist and professor of hydrogeology at the Free University of Berlin .
Life
Asaf Pekdeğer came from a prominent Turkish family. His cousin Kemal Derviş was Vice President of the World Bank and Turkish Minister of Economics under Prime Minister Bülent Ecevit . There is also a grand vizier among his ancestors .
Pekdeğer grew up in Ankara and studied in Germany, where he lived and worked until his death. In 1977 he received his doctorate from the University of Kiel with an investigation into the quality of groundwater . From 1987 he represented the Hydrogeology Department at the Free University of Berlin in the Geosciences Department. His research and teaching activities focused on groundwater management, hydrogeochemistry and geothermal energy .
Pekdeğer had been a German citizen since 1996.
