Asaita (also Asayita or Aysaita ) was the capital of the Afar region in Ethiopia . The place is in the northeastern part of the country, on the edge of the Danakil desert . The border with Djibouti is around 50 km away. In the southeast of Asaita there are 20 saltwater lakes. Among them the Gamarri , which is known for its flamingos and the Abbe Lake , into which the Awash flows. The place is at an altitude of 378 m and in 2007 had 16,052 inhabitants.
The city Semera , one under construction, planned city has taken over the role as capital of Afar. This city is on the Awash to Assab road on the Red Sea. In contrast, Asaita is 50 kilometers from this road and can only be reached via a gravel road.
