Semera (also Samara ) is a test tube town on the edge of the Danakil Desert in northeast Ethiopia . It has been the capital of the Afar region since 2007 . Before that, Asaita, about 100 km southeast, had this function. Together with the larger city of Logiya , located 7 km to the southeast, around 94,000 people live here.

history

As early as 1996, the Ethiopian government began building the new Afar capital on the main road from Awash to Assab in Eritrea . However, the further development of the city was slow due to the conflict with Eritrea and the border closure in 1998. As a result, the Ethiopian import / export shifted to the port of Djibouti and consequently to the roads further south and the Addis Ababa – Djibouti railway line .

Infrastructure

Semera is located directly on the Awash-Asseb-Highway and thus on the connection to the port of Assab on the Red Sea , which is accessible again after the opening of the border in 2018. The airport is named after Sultan Alimirah Hanfare and connects Semera with Addis Ababa . In 2008, Samara University was founded. The Semera Archaeological Museum shows, among other things, a copy of Lucy's skeleton .
