Wolf Vielstich (born June 18, 1923 in Munich ) is a German electrochemist who taught as a professor at the University of Bonn from 1965 to 1988 ; from 1972 he was institute director there. The subjects of his research work include batteries and fuel cells as well as electrochemical principles and research methods . He is also known as the author of a textbook on electrochemistry .

Life

Vielstich studied physics in Göttingen and received his diploma in the group of Karl-Friedrich Bonhoeffer . He did his doctorate in Göttingen with Heinz Gerischer ; he designed and built a fast potentiostat . From 1958 he worked in Bonn. In 1960 Wernher von Braun offered him a leading position in the development of fuel cells for the Apollo program , which he did not accept in favor of his habilitation and an academic career. The habilitation took place in 1962 on the subject of fuel cells. At that time he also worked for Ruhrchemie AG, z. B. together with Eduard Justi on the subject of water electrolysis, but also on fuel cells and the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis . From 1965 he held a professorship at the University of Bonn , from 1972 as head of the institute.

Wolf Vielstich's doctoral students include Joachim Heitbaum , Rudolf Holze and Wolfgang Schmickler . Petr Novák was a Humboldt Fellow at Vielstich from 1988–1989 .

After his retirement in Bonn in 1988 he worked at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich and at the Universidade Federal de São Carlos . From 1986 to 1993, Vielstich was the coordinator of the first European research project on direct methanol fuel cells .

Awards

In 1998, Vielstich received the Faraday Medal from the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC).
