Rail transport

The old, meter-gauge railway line Djibouti – Addis Ababa ran through Awash . Here, near the city, a serious railway accident occurred on the afternoon of January 13, 1985 , in which 428 people died when a train fell off the Awash Bridge. This was probably the worst railway accident in the history of Africa .

Since 2006 the operation of the railway has been stopped because the technical defects no longer allowed it. The 100-year-old station building of the station Awash now acts as an inexpensive hotel and restaurant.

In 2016, the new, now standard-gauge railway line Addis Ababa – Djibouti was opened, on which Awash again received a train station. Another line is being built that branches off from Awash in a north-easterly direction, the Awash – Hara Gebeya railway line . It is scheduled to open in 2018.

economy

Awash lives economically from trade, but also has a dromedary breeding with export to the Arab region.

Culture

The city is predominantly Islamic , but also has an older Ethiopian Orthodox Church.
