The Awash National Park is one of the national parks in Ethiopia . It was founded in 1969 and has an area of ​​approx. 756 km².

location

The national park is located at the southern tip of the Afar region , 225 km east of Addis Ababa . The next larger city is Awash , which is east of the park. In the south, the national park is bordered by the Awash River and Lake Basaka . The road from Addis Ababa to Dire Dawa divides the park into the southern Illala Saha plain and the northern Kidu valley . The park is shaped by the Fantale volcano , which reaches a height of 2,007 meters and thus protrudes far out of the landscape, which is on average around 900 meters above sea level.

The temperatures in the park are very hot, reaching more than 40 degrees Celsius. In the nights it cools down to temperatures between 10 and 22 degrees Celsius. The rainy season falls from February to August; an average of 619 mm of precipitation falls

The landscape is dominated by acacia forest and grassland. In the higher Kidu Valley there are hot springs surrounded by palm groves.

The wildlife in the park reflects the drought that prevails for much of the year. The wild animal species that live here include the Beisa antelope , the summer ring gazelle , large and small kudu , waterbuck and the Eritrean dikdik , reedbuck and aardvark . In the mountainous areas can also be cliff divers encounter. Zebras are mainly found in the west of Fantale.
