The Alatish National Park is a protected area in the northwest of Ethiopia . It is located over 900 km north of Addis Ababa in the Benishangul-Gumuz region , covers 2665 km² and was placed under protection in 2006.

nature and landscape

The topography of the park is characterized by flat to hilly plains, which are interrupted by valleys, streams, hills and sometimes only seasonally water-bearing wetlands. The predominant vegetation types are mixed forests, which are dominated by trees of the genera long filaments and terminalia , riparian vegetation and wetland vegetation, which are interspersed with scattered trees such as acacia , terminalia and desert date . There are also loosely tree-lined grassland areas in which the tree species Anogeissus leiocarpa and long-thread species dominate, as well as hilly areas in which ficus species and bamboo species of the genus Dendrocalamus dominate.

Wildlife

The fauna of the park includes numerous smaller mammals such as B. 23 species of rodents u. a. the elephant , leopard , greater and lesser kudu, and seven types of reptiles and amphibians . In 2016, a previously unknown lion population of around 200 animals was discovered in the park and in the adjacent Sudanese Dinder National Park . Notable reptile species include the northern rock python , monitor lizards , uraeus snake , black mamba and Blanding's night tree snake .

Residents

Members of the tribes of various ethnic groups ( Gumuz , Agew and Amhara ) live in the vicinity of the park .
