The Gambela National Park is in the region of Gambela of the western lowlands of Ethiopia on the border with Sudan situated National Park . It covers an area of 5,061 km² and was originally placed under protection in order to protect an extensive swamp area with its fauna, which is special for Ethiopia. In addition to the savannahs typical of Ethiopia, it therefore also has floodplains, forests and slowly flowing waters and was settled by the Nuer and Anuak peoples .

Wildlife

The more common mammals include the elephant , Cape buffalo , giraffe , topi , waterbuck , plains zebra , white-eared kob , roan antelope , white-naped bog antelope and warthog . Hippos and Nile crocodiles can be found in the rivers .

In addition, over 300 species of birds have been registered in the park. Of which are Schuhschnabel , Grünstirnspint , red-headed Cistensänger , Fox Cistensänger , Basrah warbler , gray cap Eremomela , Gambagaschnäpper , Braunwangenmahali , bush sparrow , red-winged pytilia , black-faced firefinch , black-rumped waxbill and long-tailed Paradieswitwe considered rare or threatened. Due to its importance for the bird world, the park has been classified as an Important Bird Area .

Danger

The park was placed under protection as early as 1973, but there are no effective measures to enforce this protection. Impairments result from the fact that the area is surrounded by cotton plantations and refugee camps of the South Sudanese who fled the civil war . The largest protected area in the country is threatened by new settlements, the hunt for game meat and the establishment of fields and pastures by slash and burn by Nilotic peoples, as is the Boma National Park opposite in Sudan .
