The Kaftah Sheraro National Park is a protected area in Ethiopia on the border with Eritrea , between Shiraro in the east, Wolkait in the south and Humera in the west. It is located in the Tigray region , covers 5000 km² and was placed under protection in 1999.

geography

The national park is at an altitude of between 1800 meters in the highlands of Kafta and 500 meters on the Tekeze River. Although the Tekeze is the main river in the area, the area also gets its water from a number of other rivers that come from the Simien Mountains and the Wolkait highlands . Rain falls especially in the months of May and September.

nature and landscape

The predominant vegetation types are Acacia Commiphora savannahs and dry evergreen mountain forests.

The national park is of particular importance for the conservation of the African elephant in Ethiopia, with the population of the park, comprising around 100 to 150 animals, changing seasonally between Ethiopia and Eritrea. The park is also gaining in importance for the wintering of the young crane. There are up to 20,000 specimens of this species in the northwest of the park.

Other notable species that are found here are the ostrich , the aardvark , the red-fronted gazelle , the kudu and roan antelope, as well as the caracal , leopard and lion . A total of 42 species of mammals, 167 species of birds and 9 species of reptiles have so far been recorded in the park.
