The Bale Mountains National Park (English: Bale Mountains National Park) is a protected area in the Ethiopian region of Oromia . It was expelled in 1969 and protects the largest contiguous alpine landscape in all of Africa.

The national park has an area of ​​2471 km² and is between 1550 m and 4377 m above sea level . It is the highest region in southern Ethiopia and is about 420 km south of Addis Ababa . The park administration is in the city of Dinsho . The Tulu Dimtu is the second highest mountain in Ethiopia at 4377 m.

fauna

The park is known as a “hot spot” of biological diversity , as the species communities there were able to develop in absolute isolation.

The Ethiopian wolf , which lives here, is particularly rare and worthy of protection . About half of the total population of only 450 animals live in the national park. Both the Frankfurt Zoological Society and the Ethiopian Wolf Conservation Program (EWCP) in cooperation with Oxford University , the Ethiopian government and National Geographic endeavor to preserve this species . In addition, the occurrence of mountain nyalas and the Ethiopian green monkey are worth mentioning, as well as the fact that nine endemic species of rodents occur, including the giant climber mouse ( Megadendromus nikolausi ) and the giant mole rat ( Tachyoryctes macrocephalus ). Of the 78 mammal species recorded in the national park, 20 are endemic to Ethiopia.

In the national park including endemic of the 17 species in Ethiopia have been detected more than 280 species of birds alone seven: gold necklace Pieper , yellow-headed parrot , Strichelbrustkiebitz , Schwarzkopfgirlitz , Abyssinian catbird , juniper woodpecker and the Meisensängerart Parisoma greaventris . Among the other notable species of birds, many birds of prey like are spotted eagle , imperial eagle , Black Eagle , tawny eagle , steppe eagle , Pallid Harrier , augur buzzard , Lanner Falcon , Lesser Kestrel , and bearded vulture to mention. Due to the extreme height differences within the park, there is a mixed alpine flora. However, the omnipresent juniper trees are characteristic.
