The yellow-headed parrot ( Poicephalus flavifrons ), also known as the chocolate parrot , is one of the least explored species of long-winged parrots . It can only be found in the highlands of Ethiopia . Its species status is controversial, it is possibly a color variant of the Congo parrot . The bellows material, on which the scientific description of the species is based, shows only minor differences, so this may be a color mutation. DNA tests are still pending.
Statements about the population situation of this parrot species are also not yet possible. The parrot inhabits the forests of the Ethiopian highlands as well as open woodland up to an altitude of over 3,000 meters above sea level. Extensive deforestation has greatly changed the habitat of the yellow-headed parrot, so that a population decline is generally assumed.
The following subspecies are described for the yellow-headed parrot:
- Poicephalus flavifrons flavifrons
- Poicephalus flavifrons aurantiiceps
