The Yangudi Rassa National Park has an area of ​​4731 km² and is located in the Afar region , 500 kilometers north-east of Addis Ababa in Ethiopia . The park is located at altitudes between 400 m and 1459  m . Daily maximum temperatures can reach over 42 degrees Celsius. There is little rainfall, so the vegetation in this semi-desert consists mainly of semi-arid grass and savannah . The protection status of the national park has not yet been implemented.

history

The Yangudi Rassa National Park was established in 1969 to protect the African wild ass ( Equus africanus ), which is now extinct in the area. No wild asses could be confirmed as early as 1994. In 2007 it was declared that the wild ass in the national park was extinct. In the neighboring Mile Serdo wild ass reserve there is still an apparently stable small population of the rare species.

Wildlife

The park provides habitat for 36 species of mammals, including oryx , Sömmerringgazellen , warthogs , giraffes gazelles , Grevy's zebras , Large and Small Kudus . Predators are represented by servals , cheetahs , leopards and African gold wolves .

There are also around 140 species of birds, including two endemics , in this park. Particularly noteworthy among the birds are the African ostrich , the lesser flamingo and the Arab bustard .
