The Abijatta-Shalla Lakes National Park (also - Shala -), named after the two lakes in the national park, is an Ethiopian nature reserve in the area of ​​the Great Rift Valley, the East African Rift Valley . The park is located about 200 km south of Addis Ababa in the Oromiyaa region . It was designated in 1963 and has a size of 887 square kilometers, of which 482 square kilometers are water bodies. The main reason for its protection was to preserve the abundant populations of water birds that visit the lakes to forage and breed.

Geographical and climatic conditions

The park lies at an altitude of approx. 1540 to 2075 meters, with Mount Fike being the highest point. It lies between the two lakes. Temperatures reach up to 45 degrees Celsius in summer. In the rainy season between March and September up to 500 mm of precipitation falls.

About 30 species of mammals can be found here, including the greater kudu , the Grant's gazelle , the klipspringer and the African gold wolf .

A total of 299 bird species have so far been recorded in the national park, almost half of all species recorded in the country, including six endemics .
