List of Jupiter's moons
The following table contains the most important data of the 69 first discovered of all 79 natural satellites of Jupiter known to date .
It is arranged according to the official number of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) and according to the semi-major axis . Newly discovered objects are initially given a provisional designation ; if a secured orbit can be determined, they will later be given a name by the IAU. An object with a provisional designation is e.g. B. S / 2011 J 1 . The orbits of various candidate satellites are not known accurately enough. It is therefore not possible to locate them specifically and are therefore currently considered lost.
By far the largest satellites are the four Galilean moons , which together make up more than 99.997 percent of the mass of all of Jupiter 's moons .
The most important dates of the moons of Jupiter
An orbit inclination of over 90 ° means that the satellite orbits Jupiter in a retrograde manner. As a rule, moons move prograd , i.e. H. in the same direction of rotation around the planet as the planet rotates around its own axis.
